My Top 5 Apps
I've recently changed some of the tech stuff that I use, including Firefox, which I've been using for nearly two decades. It got me thinking: what other tools am I hanging onto but don't really need anymore? Is there a good alternative? Is it useful to keep some apps around just in case?
So I cleaned house. On my phone, I deleted every app I haven't used in the last 6 months. To be fair, there weren't that many. On my computer, I did the same, though I keep it pretty light so I really just removed a couple things I'm not using anymore.
Then I started thinking: what are my top apps? Can I get away with just using them and deleting all the rest (at least all that my Samsung device will let me)?
I'm not including the browser in these lists for the same reason I'm not mentioning that my fave phone is the only one I have. It's ubiquitous. It's a given. Also, all my social media is accessed via the browser. So aside from that...
Android
HeliBoard - it's a keyboard I downloaded from F-Droid. Open source, offline, and tracker-free. It's simple and it's good. While it is multilingual, there is not yet support for Japanese, so I do keep Swiftkey around for this purpose.
Textra - for SMS. Customizable and reliable.
Feeder - for newsfeeds.
DAVx5 - to sync my self-hosted calendar to the default Calendar app and my self-hosted contacts into the default Contacts app.
Keepass2Android - password manager.
Computer
I'm not even sure this is worth mentioning. My computer usage is pretty basic...
VIM - If I'm not in the browser, I'm probably in VIM.
Mutt - Email in the terminal.
Wttr.in - to get the current weather in the terminal.
GIMP - I do very little image editing, but when I do...
VLC - I do even less video-watching outside the browser, but when it does come up...
